Happy Slip deletes her MySpace Account
Our dearest Fil-Am Video Blogger Ms. Christine Gambito more popularly known as Happy Slip have just deleted her MySpace account for the reason that she objects on its inappropriate ads (powered by Google). She says that the ads are in direct conflict with the HappySlip brand and especially misrepresentative of Filipina women.
Having read her latest blog and her endeavor to further create a cleaner image of Filipinas thru Cyberspace, my respect and admiration for her grew even bigger.
Interesting quote I’ve read from it;
According to a Human Protection Law enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the Philippines, it is unlawful “To establish or carry on a business which has for its purpose the matching of Filipino women for marriage to foreign nationals either on a mail order basis or personal introduction”. It is unlawful “To solicit, enlist or in any manner attract or introduce any Filipino woman to become a member in any club or association whose objective is to match women for marriage to foreign nationals either on a mail order basis or through personal introduction for a fee”. This law was enacted to “take measures to protect Filipino women from being exploited in utter disregard of human dignity in their pursuit of economic upliftment.”
More information on her blog.

so many irritating laws in the US
i think its a wise disission cos it will give the philioian wemone a great image instead of giving her the wrong one
yeah too manny irritating laws.
Isn’t this a law that was passed in the Philippines? Thanks to Christine Gambito for bringing our attention to it — in a most prominent manner.
In case you can’t go to her blog directly, here’s the entry: http://www.happyslip.com/2008/06/07/myspace-account-deleted/
And Christine’s original post about the Google Ads on her MySpace account: http://www.happyslip.com/2008/04/15/you-can-help-with-a-comment/
I may be mistaken, but I was under the impression that this law has not been made effective yet, could someone clarify this.
SEC 7 This Act shall take effect upon its publication for two (2) consecutive weeks in a newspaper of general circulation.
Also wondering about the consitutional rights of Filipina in regard to seeking a partner online? Are Filipina allowed to meet other people from around world and establish relationships of their own free will.
SEC 5 Nothing in this act shall be interpreted as a restriction on the freedom of speech and of association for purposes not contrary to law as guaranteed by the Constitution.
And in this section, the reference to “For a Fee” seems to be an argument that could be employed by social networkig sites, like myspace and friendster and other such sites who do not charge a fee.
(3) To solicit, enlist or in any manner attract or introduce any Filipino woman to become a member in any club or association whose objective is to match women for marriage to foreign nationals either on a mail order basis or through personal introduction for a fee.
Does anybody here know a legal practitioner to shed a little light on the interpretation of this act?
Sincerely curious
Alan
