Filipinas: Portraits of Thirty Outstanding Filipino Women

Silverlens gallery, together with H.E. Cristina Ortega, Ambassador of the Philippines to the Kingdom of Belgium and the Grand Duchy of Luxemburg and to the European Communities, is launching FILIPINAS: Photographs by Isa Lorenzo, on 6 March 2008 in the Philippine Embassy in Brussels, Belgium. This is in celebration of International Women’s Day.

FILIPINAS features intimate portraits of thirty women – photographed by Isa Lorenzo — who represent the arts, education, social work, civil society and politics. No elaborate costumes, frivolous props, nor backdrops were used, only film and a simple background in the style of studio photography from the 1940’s and ‘50’s. Curated by Deanna Ongpin-Recto, the show’s cast of Filipinas, chosen for their personality, their achievements, and the influence they exerted on their times. The thirty women are:

TERESITA ANG-SEE, HELENA Z. BENITEZ, GILDA CORDERO-FERNANDO, VIRGINIA OTEYZA DE GUIA, FE DEL MUNDO, NENA DEL ROSARIO-VILLANUEVA, AMEURFINA M. HERRERA, ALICE P. LORENZO, EVA FIDELA MAAMO, SOLITA C. MONSOD, LOURDES R. MONTINOLA, VIRGINIA R. MORENO, MARIA ISABEL ONGPIN, HONORATA MUYOT, LETICIA RAMOS-SHAHANI, SANTANINA TILLAH RASUL, LEONORA PARAAN SAN AGUSTIN, ARMIDA SIGUION-REYNA., GLORIA BORREGO GALLA, CORAZON C. AQUINO, SOCORRO C. RAMOS, LIGAYA FERNANDO-AMILBANGSA, ROSARIO G. MANALO, FE MUYOT, EUGENIA D. APOSTOL, CARMEN GUERERRO-NAKPIL, ANITA MAGSAYSAY-HO, ESTEFANIA ALDABA-LIM, HAYDEE B. YORAC and DAISY HONTIVEROS-AVELLANA.

“All my life, I have been fascinated by the Filipina, how she holds power within our societal system, how she manages this power by quietly taking on pivotal roles, and how she uses this power to eventually come into her own,” says Lorenzo. “The result of her individual journey is what I am interested in: the strong, timeless Filipina with a humanity that transcends history and legacy.”

FILIPINAS: Photographs by Isa Lorenzo will run in the Philippine Embassy, Avenue Moliere 297, 1050 Brussels until March 13, 2008. For more information call (632) 8160044 or email [email protected]
