There is an active campaign now to reclaim the Filipina image online. As I googled Filipina at 10:06AM, I saw the campaign site ranked third after Wikipedia and to a dating site. The several sites which followed were of online dating and photos of Filipinas in various scantily clad poses, all aimed at the libido. You can see this on the screen shot where the campaign site is the one marked in red. (Please click on the image for a larger view)

Let us push for elevating the Filipina to more relevant categories other than online dating sites to search engines. I personally do not believe the campaign is pointed against those who frequent these online dating sites but for a restructuring of the Filipina image as more than a dating site.

Here are a few suggestions from me.

Purchasing home and building supplies could be strenuous for some women and demanding for others specially when unable to prioritize and identify exactly what needs to be bought, from where and why. The world today is facing a danger no man thought would be ever happen- Global warming. How do we help lessen this danger through our purchases and the choices we make in purchasing home and building supplies?

Two things:

1. Buy local products and support local businesses- Locally owned businesses can make more local purchases requiring less transportation and generally set up shop in town or city centers as opposed to developing on the fringe. This generally means contributing less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution. Several studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally owned business, rather than a nationally owned businesses, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms — continuing to strengthen the economic base of the community. Supporting local businesses creates jobs locally, encourages local prosperity and above all putting the local people’s taxes to good use.

2. Buy green organic products- By definition, organic products are free from pesticides, herbicides, and other potentially harmful substances that can damage your health. Exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from pesticides has been linked to cancer, immune system suppression, nervous system disorders, reproductive damage, and hormone disruption. Many products that are made from conventionally grown crops show pesticide and herbicide residues. Our bodies can get rid of a certain number of toxins that we come in contact with; in fact, our bodies are designed to eliminate toxins. However, the problem we are facing today is that we have many more exposures to chemical toxins than, say 50 years ago. These chemicals come from our food, air, water, body care and cleaning products, home remodeling products and more. Many of us are consequently facing a toxic overload, and our bodies therefore cannot get rid of all the toxins we are taking in. Organic products are sustainable.

Using organic products will help to lessen this toxic load. Organic foods also tend to taste better and contain more vitamins and minerals than conventionally grown food. Some organic products are still difficult to find, and a stretch for many of our budgets. However, any switch we can make to organic will be helpful. You don’t have to start buying everything organic overnight, in fact, you would probably find that impossible. However, as there is more demand for organic products, the selection will increase and prices will probably decrease. Using organic products is useful and helpful to babies, children and those who have compromised health issues. Babies and children tend to be more vulnerable because their immune systems are immature and they eat more food per pound of body weight than do adults. Those with chronic illness or whose bodies are weakened for any reason are also more at risk. In addition, farm workers are at risk for illnesses caused by pesticide exposure.Lastly, using organic products is best for the environment. Conventional farming practices have caused many problems in our environment. They adversely affect birds and wildlife as well as fragile ecosystems. It has been estimated that pesticides kill at least 67 million birds in the US each year. In many cases, pesticides applied to fields have led to major ecosystem imbalances that resulted in failed crops. Minor pests can turn into major pests when pesticides eliminate the beneficial insects that keep these pests in check. Drinking water supplies get polluted. Crop dusting has led to “drift” of pesticides from fields to residential neighborhoods and even schools and caused illness. Organic and sustainable farming methods avoid these and many more problems. Eating, drinking and using organic products on a more frequent basis, from food to baby care to clothes, will make all of us healthier. This is especially true for babies, children and those with compromised immune systems. Increasing our consumption of organic products will also have a positive impact on the environment, and the more demand for organic goods, the better the selection and the lower the cost.

The introduction of gender laws in the Philippines has showed substantial progress in terms of protecting women and children from abuses. In other countries in Asia and in some parts of our country however, gender discrimination remains pervasive.

Although the efforts of the government and NGOs and other concerned groups are laudable in promoting gender equality, it seemed off-track or probably lacking attention on particular segment of “women” like youth and the elderly.

While there are a lot of activities and programs on addressing gender parity, most of these efforts are directed towards the very young (children) and adults (those in their mid-20s to middle-age). Although there are, it seemed that promotions of gender empowerment targeted for the youth sector of our communities are insufficient. Take for example the increase of porn websites featuring young Pinays, not to mention those who provide live show for foreigners in their very own home in exchange of dollars. Many teen Filipinas also fall for the empty promises of online dating sites as well as mail-to-order bride programs in the hope of finding rich foreign husbands or lovers.

The problems of teen pregnancy and marriages are also prevalent. Most cases, these predicaments are prone to rebelling teens who were thinking of entering into relationships as an escape from family problems. There were also cases of physically, sexually or emotionally abused teens.

In this day and age, you’d think our youth are wiser, more practical and more responsible but no, they’re still young, they need guidance. Our young Filipinas need to be prodded on developing their awareness on their fragility to be in abusive situations. We must invest more on transforming and developing our young women. Soon, they would be the champions
of gender equality and development. They are the future of the kind of Filipino Women we shall have in our society.

If we are reshaping the Filipina images online, it would be a good step also to uplift the online images of our young Filipinas. I hope that one day soon, when I google the word Filipina teens, I would not be given tons of porn sites on our young Pinays. I hope that soon, all our young women would be wanting to get the highest education they can have, that they would be promoters of advocacies, and that they would be dreamers of the good life. I hope they would be more self-assured and sensible that they would not be jumping from one messy situation to another in a state of confusion.

Let us hope but let us not only do that, let us also combine our efforts in helping our young Filipina to be truly empowered.

Since the birth of the blogosphere, I have been so hooked into the phenomenon. Not only because of my passion in writing, but also due to the satisfaction it gives me every time I am overwhelmed with stress and pressures at school, family, friends and the like. It is the sanctuary of my emotions. Throughout the years, my blog had been my shock absorber, an avid listener of my rants and raves in life.

Maybe the reason why it had been a very powerful tool for Filipinas like me is because we are naturally born to communicate with our feelings through words. Scientifically, women have amygdalas connected to their left-brains, which are primarily responsible for letting our emotions expressed through words; reason why mothers are usually known naggers.

More than just an online diary, it is also used for resourceful means. There are many existing blogs that have been very useful as research materials. These are literary blogs, entertainment blogs, and photoblogs, to name a few.

However, due to the popularity of this new form of communication, and how it has been irresponsibly utilized by some, the image of the Filipina have been blackened and its distorted impression splattered all over the World Wide Web. Blogs, more often than not, have become the showroom of Filipina “wares” for the whole world’s consumption. Some have used the blog as vehicle towards the fulfillment of a dream for a better life by way of marriage or relationship with a foreigner presumed to be economically well off. It has become her ad space, thus making her vulnerable to all sorts of personalities. Thanks God to those who are lucky to have a good catch through the blog; but woe to those who become prey to homicidal maniacs who only used his fair skin to lure the unsuspecting Filipina. Not all Caucasians can promise her of an economically good life ahead. Unwittingly, the Filipina herself have helped soil her image around the world.

“Why is this so?”

I ask myself. What could be the main reason why we have been brought up to this kind of demeaning image? Is it only because of their inferior perception of us? Is it because we let this happen? Or could it be because we lack respect for ourselves? Or could the reason be political?

If Rizal were to catch a glimpse of the present situation of our country, can you imagine what could his initial reaction be to us, his descendants?

Just like the evolution of communication through blogs, the nation had witnessed Filipina evolved through ages. Tracing down the roots of our history, we have produced a number of Filipinas who have given pride to our nation. And with this, I am proud to say that I am a product of Melchora Aquino, who have been a refuge for the sick and wounded revolutionaries; of Teodora Alonzo, who have molded our national hero who served as the voice of our nation; of Corazon Aquino, who have stood as the mother of the multitude of crowds towards restoring our nation; of Miriam Quiambao, who bravely stood up despite her fall. These Filipina women, is indeed a representation of a real Filipina: Brave. Strong. And speaks up for her dignity.

The misleading image of a Filipina all over the Internet is slowly tearing down our state. Thus, we need to make our move to bring back the real picture of a Filipina. In this fast paced era, the reform is right at our fingertips. Speak up. All you need is just a blog. If you do so, I’m certain that Rizal would be more than happy because you not just made a reform amidst the wrong impression of a Filipina; but also, you made yourself a hero through easy and peaceful means.

Over here in the Philippines, this site ranks number 2 and has been on page 1 of the Filipina Google SERPs.

Another great news is that traffic to this site has significantly increased. Is it because the visitors are brought in here while doing their search on the “Filipina”? This trend will continue as long as we churn out original entries that shows the various images of the filipina. So keep on with the campaign.

In the Philippines Google SERPs of August 2, 2007, the Filipina Women’s Network (FWN) was number 6 of page 1 . Today it is number 2. The Filipino people – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ranks as number 1.

It looks like we will attain a balance sooner than we thought. Maybe it’s about time to change the Filipina links to :

The internet is a “context based, indexed filing system” and therefore, when web pages change the meaning of general context from negative to positive it becomes a trend that like a blotter, at once gets spot, then starts to become saturated.

Picture it as a cup of vinegar in a large vat. We add an equal part of apple cider and it still is bitter… not sweet at all by eventually, adding enough cider begins to sweeten the brew until finally, many gallons/liters later, the vinegar can not be tasted at all and we have a context that is pure MASARAP!

In the Philippines Google Search Engine Results Page (SERPs) of August 2, 2007, the Filipina Women’s Network (FWN) was number 6 of page 1 . It was one reason the site was chosen as the sitewide links for the Filipina Campaign. (Other Filipina sites will follow suit) There is a strong possibility to rank this group as number 1 for the “Filipina” keyword.

As of today (August 9, 2007 ), Filipina Women’s Network is number 3 in the Philippines Google Search Engine Results Page (SERPs) while it ranks as number 11 in the USA Google SERPs. There is a long way to go but we’re getting there slowly but surely. Continue the Filipina Campaign
