BB Gandanghari (Not Bebe Gandanghari)

BB Gandanghari is just plain BB, beautiful, smart, vibrant and at peace with herself. BB’s name is derived from her motto, “Be all that you can be.” It is also short for Binibining Gandanghari, a Tagalog phrase which literally translates into “maiden with the beauty of a king.” I am truly amazed at her courage, the courage to be her real self. Now she finds peace with her God and herself. She is proud to carry the name “Filipina” whenever she is in another country.

Here is BB Gandanghari, formerly Rustom Padilla, feeling like a female, feeling filipina. Is the filipino society ready to embrace BB as filipina?

Another interview from the Asian Human Rights Commission.
PHILIPPINES: former action star talks about gay rights online

Bebe’s insight into his own process of coming out and acceptance is fundamental to an understanding of gay rights. Even according to Bebe, his identity is not a choice but a gradual acceptance of an orientation which did not happen overnight. Every part of the process of awareness, acceptance and coming out is not to be taken simplistically and dismissively.

Giving voice to one’s person is not an issue among typical male and female members of society We hear them all the time, a male or a female doctor, a female or a male lawyer, a priest or a nun, etc. Gay’s do speak but in certain societies in hush tones and hidden corners. Indeed, there are Asian societies where their voices are considered a public disturbance. Bebe explains how different his experience is among Filipinos, women in particular. “For some reason they seem to like me and even identify with me,” explains Bebe. Why do they like her? What do they exactly like about her? Notwithstanding some unfavourable past experiences with some family members, colleagues and others, Bebe finds Philippine society not that bad. However, she really felt free and encouraged to come out when he was in the U.S. Coming to voice is easier in a less judgmental and open society.

Bebe’s coming out is not a purely psycho-emotional experience. “It is more, ” he explains.”It is being able to stand naked before God…being able to be yourself before God,” she adds. “Be as you are…be as you are supposed to be…that is what BeBe means,” she explains.

  1. Is this for real? Or is Rustom just doing this for publicity/attention?

  2. Not sure if my comment went through… But I was just wondering if this for real? Or is Rustom just doing it for attention/publicity?

  3. I don’t agree with BB’s decision to come out in such a flamboyant manner! Like him, I am also struggling with same-sex attraction, but I do not believe that “coming out gay” is the solution. I respect his decision though and I have no right to judge him. May he find the true and lasting hapiness that he is looking for.

  4. I believe this is for real. Let’s give her a chance to be herself.

  5. I believe in my heart, BB is not flamboyant. She is comfortable as a woman. She is classy, and respects herself enough not to make a laughing stock of herself. Just wait and see.

  6. I think that’s why I questioned the intent because it was kinda showy. It was on national tv! I don’t know… Somehow, it feels insincere.

Also, is her decision to cross dress because she really feels like a woman? Or does she just think that as a gay guy, it’s expected of her?

I had a college classmate who was a guy his whole life, but felt trapped in that body, so he went through treatments and emerged as a woman during her first year in college.

But, despite my doubts, if she’s happy, then that’s great and that’s all that really matters anyway :)

  7. Can “he” even be legally called a “she”? Which court did he applied for a sex change and name change? I think it’s immoral to call a man a “she”.

  8. who are you to judge what is immoral or not?

  9. Sorry to be too crass. Just got it from the Bible as what taught to us in Catholic school.

    Leviticus 20:13

“If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltness is upon them”.

    1 Corinthians 6:9-10

“Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, shall inherit the kingdom of God.”

    Romans 1:26-28

“For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper.”

  10. That’s right and let God be the judge not YOU! .

  11. this is the 21st century, bigotry died a long time ago. let’s not judge bebe. she’s alright in my book!

  13. rustom may not be remember me anymore. i used to work in a company owned be a padilla, and i remember how aloof and difficult he was back then.
fast forward to a couple of weeks ago. i saw bebe in person and her aura was totally different. masaya siya ngayon, yung galing sa puso.
so for that reason, im happy because bebe is happy, at last.

  14. But did you not “judged” a 13-year old kid and his father? You also judged a cabinet secretary and his son who is a mayor, right?

Don’t you believe in what the Bible says? At least my judgement is based on the Holy Bible and what our parish priest preaches to us. Your judgements were based on rumors. Let not the pot call the kettle black. I find this hypocrisy appalling.

I don’t blame you. This move by Rustom and his manager is obviously a publicity stunt. It’s part of show business. I just didn’t like them using the Filipina image and exploit it. Imagine, there are millions of Filipinas in the world that should be featured and Rustom is not even a Filipina but got an interview here. It’s just a little sad that this Filipina advocacy has been tainted by the showbiz industry.

Thank you for letting me air my opinion about the Rustom issue. Really appreciate it.

  15. I think you should read my archived entries before you make statements like that and not base that on someone’s entry ( I know where you got that information and I have discussed this privately with the persons concerned.). I have opinions on certain issues and have clarified myself to the persons concerned, and even on TV. They may seem judgmental in nature but were merely opinions…but I will not delve on that here as this entry is not about me. OFFtopic.

I will not discuss bible issues or whether I read the bible or not as it is OFFTopic as well.

Let’s focus on BB and why I posted this here.

Now I placed this here because BB claims that she is proud to call herself a “filipina”

FilipinaImages.com is made of many images of the Filipina women be it in showbiz or not, mail order brides, the mothers, the daughters, your sisters. One cannot say there is one image of the Filipina . The reason for this site is to showcase all the Filipinas around the world. Hence I place it here to ask if we are ready to accept her as a Filipina. Their manager did not request me to place it here. It was my choice. In fact, the main entry is in my blog. Here is the BB Gandanghari entry.

I wonder if you even read the interview where I avoided the usual showbiz questioning.

I guess in your opinion, BB is not a Filipina.

BTW, I got an hour interview of Mayen, a Filipina who was accused of scamming her UK boyfriend and I gave her a voice.
She got almost an hour interview. I don’t think you have surfed the site long enough to see other Filipinas we have featured in the past.

Here is my video interview on Mayen.

    http://filipinaimages.com/mayen

My sister has featured other interviews as well. Just look for it in the archives.

  16. Let’s clear the air…

FilipinaImages.com is about the DIVERSE Filipina. Being INCLUSIVE about the Filipina Image means also being open about human beings who are courageous and believe that they are “Filipina.”

When Noemi and I discussed BB’s upcoming interview, we were aware that she is an emerging transgender. This means that she is evolving as we speak. Thus, a lot of the questions had something to do about empowering herself to be of service to herself and others — in uplifting human dignity.

At Filipina Images, we are proud to showcase the diversity of the Filipina Image.

For example: In the US where I am based, Filipina Women’s Network continues to evolve. We will jumpstart our mentoring program this year. See http://FilipinaWomensNetwork.org.

Let’s review one of the entries that I authored: http://filipinaimages.com/filipina-womens-networks-pinay-power-2012-time-capsule-project/

If you continue to read the entries in our evolving site, perhaps you won’t be so quick to judge our intentions. It is the effect of our actions that count. And so be it.

  17. As per if the Filipinos are ready to embrace BB as a Filipina: I hope so.

  20. To toni and to those who quote the bible judging BB,

You quote the book of Liviticus to defend your judgement. Let’s see the other passages in that same book…

Don’t let cattle graze with other kinds of Cattle (Leviticus 19:19)

Don’t have a variety of crops on the same field. (Leviticus 19:19)

Don’t wear clothes made of more than one fabric (Leviticus 19:19)

Don’t cut your hair nor shave. (Leviticus 19:27)

Any person who curseth his mother or father, must be killed. (Leviticus 20:9) Have you ever done that?

If a man cheats on his wife, or vise versa, both the man and the woman must die. (Leviticus 20:10). I wonder if Dr. Laura would like that one to be enforced?

If a man sleeps with his father’s wife… both him and his father’s wife is to be put to death. (Leviticus 20:11)

If a man sleeps with his wife and her mother they are all to be burnt to death. (Leviticus 20:14)

If a man or woman has sex with an animal, both human and animal must be killed. (Leviticus 20:15-16). I guess you should kill the animal since they were willing participants. Are they crazy?

If a man has sex with a woman on her period, they are both to be “cut off from their people” (Leviticus 20:18)

Psychics, wizards, and so on are to be stoned to death. (Leviticus 20:27)

If a priest’s daughter is a whore, she is to be burnt at the stake. (Leviticus 21:9)

People who have flat noses, or is blind or lame, cannot go to an altar of God (Leviticus 21:17-18)

Anyone who curses or blasphemes God, should be stoned to death by the community. (Leviticus 24:14-16)

Don’t let cattle graze with other kinds of Cattle (Leviticus 19:19)

Please, toni, tell me you do not adhere to these.

Whatever happened to the scripture that goes something like this: he (or she) who has cast no sin be the first to throw a stone at this sinner?

Why do we burn others with the fire we have inside us?

  21. Well, if he’s happy about it, why not give him a chance? We have our own freedom to do what makes us happy. Besides, wala namn siyang inaagrabyadong tao…

astrodeuss last blog post..Military Encounters: Part 1.2

  22. if rustom/BB is happy on what she/he is now… support nyo na lang all d way… dont judge her… lhat naman ng tao my flaws… kayo do u have the courage to shout what you really feel?

  23. Hey people. Why don’t we all shut up and get on with it. I don’t mean to be offensive but I don’t like homosexuals. BUT! If a person finds happiness and solace in something most of us don’t believe in then why should we care? Just leave him/her alone, since if she/he is happy then it’s ok.

  24. It doesn’t matter what BB has become. Fos aslong as he does not step on other people’s foot no hurt other’s feelings.
Just like all of us, he is entitled to live his own life so let this person be. At least he is honest enough to admit who and what he is.

  25. I personaly like Rustom as he was. But hings change. To feel like a woman is a thing no one can control Somehow, in my point f view, I agree with one of the commentators who said he did it the Flamboyant manner.

I cannot judge him cause I am not him and I never felt like the way he feel… somehow he should have thought better before he did that. Despite his current status now, being famous again, it seems that he also became someone na pinagtatwanan na lang ng bang tao..
Di naman sa dijudge ko coz i respect his decision nanghihinayang lang. And we also have to accept the way he is now.Pero sakin as a christian, he’s still a he and no one can ever change that. Ever. ( No Offense please.. )

  26. Here is a fact and the truth: Transgenders are not gay men who think and feel they are women born in the wrong body. They are not, as stated by one so-called expert, merely people who suppress their sexuality for a very long time.

“Transgender” is a term that has emerged fairly recently and is used to describe anybody who feels their gender identity and expression is different to that which was assigned to them at birth (based only on the viewing of their genitalia). A transgender may be a woman or a man, and like any woman or man, they can be heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual. Therefore, their sexuality is not their gender.

To clarify and emphasize this point, gender is who we are – it is ourselves, our person. Gender is not our body, not our genitals, not our clothes, not even our names, not our hormones and not our sexual preference.

A newborn who is pronounced male by the doctor or midwife may not necessarily identify as male when that child grows up. This person must have every right to choose to live his/her life the way s/he needs it to be lived. This person who was born male may live her life as a woman. Because she expresses and identifies as a woman, then she is a woman.

One’s gender has nothing to do with the absence or presence of a specific genitalia. Gender must not be imposed on us. Who, then, has the right to determine the gender of a person? Is it the church? Is it the doctor who inspects the baby’s genitalia upon birth? Is it the psychiatrist? Surely, it is only that person because only s/he alone possesses and has innate knowledge of his/her self.

Furthermore, a person need not make any change in order to be the gender they are. Feeling is being. No genital or cosmetic surgery, hormone replacement therapy, nor any other intervention is a prerequisite to being oneself. A man is a man and a woman is a woman not because of their genitals. We are not walking penises and vaginas. We are living beings who happen to have a certain kind of genitalia. Surely, we do not want to reduce ourselves to mere organs. Our being is a determinant of who we are, not what’s between our legs.

Man or woman. Hetero-, homo-, bi- or pansexual. These are only words, and words are only inventions. Sometimes, words are ambiguous. Sometimes, their meanings change over time. Sometimes, new words are invented as our knowledge and understanding evolves over time. It is not surprising then when sometimes, writers publish a piece that contains inaccurate and misunderstood use of certain words. Words, which in this case, are crucial to the understanding and description of other people. Words that can confuse, harass, demean and disrespect people. Hence, a writer must take it upon themselves to be vigilant in ensuring their thorough understanding of all words before going to print.

As for BB, let us respect her freedom of expression. Let us graciously accept what she tells us because only she has the right and ability to assert her own identity. Only she can truly know herself. If you don’t understand, ask her. If you can’t ask her, then it is best not to comment with so much certainty. Opinions are one thing, statements are another.

Homosexuality is a sin. This blogger defending a homosexual is brainless and therefore should be thrown also in the lake of fire together with those who are defending this idiot bb.
