I read alot of the comments and after a few negative ones I had to stop and voice my opinion.

As a filipina american I take pride in both of my cultures and I see what goes on in both countries. My father came to the Philippines in 1985 working in the Air Force, he hired my mother as one of his maids. My father was well known in the Philippines as a weather man for the Air Force, my mother always knew she was going to marry him. He taught her English and everything. He was very accepting to my mother who already had a son she gave up for adoption. She gave up my older brother for adoption because her family would disown her for having a child not being married, so she ran away. When my father heard about this he tried very hard to help my mother get him back but was un successful. They married and had me a year later.

My point is there are good American men, I've met some crazy Filipinas in my lifetime. From what I know and stories I've heard from my mother as well as other Filipinas, alot of the Filipino men are very very abusive. Beating their wife, children, I've even heard of fathers having too many children and not being able to take care of them so they will sell their own children to human trafficking. I grew up with my mother telling me to never date or marry a Filipino man.

I believe that a filipina will find love else where. I see nothing wrong with these dating sites that are doing background checks, and refusing those who don't pass these background checks. They are not selling women, and if they are then it's considered human trafficking. These dating agencies charge nothing for a profile, they only charge to translate, or send flowers or like a travel agency.

They do not sell women!

What's the difference from a filipina dating a man who's older then her, in America you see that every day.

I think it's wrong for the Philippine government to consider this as a law when they need to concentrate more on the abuse, human trafficking, economy, education, kidnapping, terrorist, etc in their country!

erm...and the economic crisis at the moment is not just in America, it's in most of the developed countries. although most, if not all are out of recession now, so wahey! fingers crossed that we don't go into a double dip....and spend, spend spend!! although UK residents beware, consumer spending will increase inflation again (we're already at 3.9%!!! 1.9% above the target rate!) and given the teensy weensy interest rates that we're getting on our savings, it's like being finding yourself in between the devil and the deep blue sea! how do i know this??? i'm an economist ;)

and the economic crisis wasn't caused by illegal immigrants (we have yet to see one that is caused by immigration, although i doubt there will ever be one...immigration displaces job, not cause an economic crisis!), it was because of the risk-loving attitudes of our bankers that ****ed us up! please, please people! inform yourselves!

I think that a few of those who posted here have gone a bit off track with what they have written. This topic was supposed to show that the Philippines (as in the government) has tried to stop possible illegal trafficking of women through mail order bride sites. However, as with several of the laws in the Philippines, there are still loopholes that surround it which make it possible for such websites to exist.

Now, as for Darcy's comments, I see his point. There is nothing wrong with two people consenting into having a relationship as long as there is no money exchanged in order for that relationship to take place. Also, I acknowledge that there are Filipinas who use the internet to find a potential husband who will allow her to leave the Philippines in the hope of a better life abroad. This may sound "desperate" to some Westerners, but as long as she doesn't just use her husband as a cash machine (or some sort of Western Union money transfer) or a sperm donor and also gives what she takes in the relationship (not just the emotional/physical aspect but the practical aspect too) then what is wrong with that? I have a niggling feeling that at this point, the person who keeps on interjecting and insulting Darcy's comments might attack me too and say that maybe I am a flat-faced 4 foot tall monkey, and maybe a Filipino too, since I am somehow agreeing with Darcy's comments. Yes, I am Filipino, no, I am not four feet tall and I am not a monkey (monkeys, even though they haven't sent their own kind to the moon or discovered penicillin, are better than humans in terms of treating their kind), and like most of you here, I don't agree with human trafficking. I also acknowledge that there are some dishonest Filipinas who use these sites in order to take advantage of men who express interest in them. I have been living with my family in the UK for 8 years now and I work part-time in order to support my postgraduate studies, and there is this gentleman at work who has told me that he had a bad experience with a Filipina who just kept on asking him to send her money but was never actually interested in him. The best advice I could give him? It wasn't, "no, don't ever go to those sites again!", but "as soon as they start asking for money, then you'll know that they're only after one thing and it's not your nice eyes or soft voice".

For the Filipinos out there who have read this string of comments on this post, please don't be tempted to hit back by saying negative things. Yes, the core Filipino values has ills of its own like colonial and crab mentality, but we're also one of the most resilient people in the world. Yes, the Philippines receives a lot of foreign aid from the US, unfortunately, I bet that most of this doesn't even reach the families that struggle to feed themselves due to the chronic corruption in the government. Maybe, just maybe, the reason why some Filipinas choose to become a mail order bride is because she doesn't see any hope in getting a better life if she just waited for something to happen to her. This however, doesn't justify in her (or any woman from any country) being abused, or to abuse the person who thought would love him.

As for the person who left quite nasty comments, please don't stereotype. I admire you for sticking with your guns, but please, don't be so closed-minded. Like with everything else, you get good ones and get bad ones. Also, please bear in mind that what you've said about Filipinos that reproduce are polluting the gene-pool...I believe that a man with a funny looking moustache had that idea in his head more than half a century ago, and that has led to the Holocaust. I am not saying you are equivalent to him, but if you are saying that you're a Christian, then a lot of those comments are certainly ones that Jesus wouldn't say.

Let's all learn to be open minded and respect each other while having opinions of our own. And smile, you'll always get a smile back! :)

Politicians themselves abused their power by having girlfriends on the sides and many times over publicly displayed their girlfriends to their wives. I agree with Mike. Women in general once they show their vulnerability they can be easily manipulated and abused whether they are married to foreigners or locals.

Philippine politicians should start applying their so called values for their women . They are a bunch of hoodlums and adulterers themselves and besides they really don't care about their people. They only care about their immediate families, and pockets. These Filipinas help feed their families by sending hard earned dollars humbling themselves because their government does not care a damn about their welfare. They only pretend to especially if election time is looming. Besides those remittances helped feeding the government a lot. Can the Philippine government find everyone a work? If so, then a lot of its good educated people won't leave the country.Hypocrites!

As Mike say Globalization is here to stay. These women are taking fate at their own hands not waiting for the divine intervention to have their wishes come true. And if you are in a starving third world corrupt countries might as well take the risk. Why not? What's wrong with marrying foreigners? Marriage or relationship in general is a risk anyway, even with it the local boyfriend or girlfriend! Some politicians just want to be self important and self-righteous! and pretends they care. What a scambug.

I have read with some chagrin the comments of adults posted here that are so funny, in a sad way. The most vociferous are from those who wish to control the lives of other adults and the frustration if their impotence is evident. I stumbled on this blog while having a sense of gratitude for my wife, a twenty something woman from Surigao del Sur, Philippines. I was about 44 when we met there. I wonder how many more middle aged American men like me have experienced the difficulty of dating in USA in an effort to find a compatible loving woman to marry with the intent to have children. There are biological facts to contend with: females past a certain age cannot bare children. Looking overseas was my last option and given the high family values in that country and the fact that more often than not young people seek lives outside the Philippines, it was an easy choice to look there. We have a gorgeous 1 1/2 year old daughter...a symbol of our successful bond.
