Alec Baldwin’s Joke on Filipina Mail Order Bride
Posted by: noemi in Filipina in the NewsUpdate May 21- Alec Baldwin Apologizes
Alec Baldwin’s joke about getting a Filipino mail-order bride provoked a sharp response in the Philippines, with one senator saying Monday that the “30 Rock” star faces violence if he ever visits.
Baldwin, 51, who is divorced with a teenage daughter, said in a May 12 interview on “The Late Show” with David Letterman that he would love to have more children.
The Emmy-winning actor quipped that he was “thinking about getting a Filipino mail-order bride at this point … or a Russian one.”
Okay, Alec Baldwin is probably not aware that we have a law banning Mail Order Marriages that facilitating or arranging a marriage between a Filipina and a foreigner has been prohibited under Republic Act 6955 or the Anti-Mail-Order Bride Law of 1990. The law “declare(s) as unlawful the practice of matching Filipino women for marriage to foreign nationals on a mail order basis and other similar practices, including the advertisement, publication, printing or distribution of brochures, fliers, and other propaganda materials in furtherance thereof and providing penalty therefore.”
Jean Enriquez, executive director of the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women-Asia Pacific, says that “…Joking about mail-order brides... is trivializing human smuggling.”
He obviously said it in jest. Yes, not a nice joke. Senator Ramon Revilla said that Baldwin’s comment was “insensitive and uncalled for” and an insult to millions of Filipinos. “Let him try to come here in the Philippines and he’ll see mayhem,” Revilla said, using a local idiom that implies the speaker will personally administer a beating.
Now , beating is too much. What an immature way to resolve this issue? Senator Revilla should just inform Alec Baldwin that we have laws banning mail order marriages. The thing is, Alec Baldwin is not alone in stereotyping Filipinas . The Filipina has been stereotyped as “mail order brides” for so long . An information campaign should consistently be disseminated. The government must implement the law prohibiting the violation of Filipino women, and should look after distressed Filipinas who have suffered abuses in the hands of foreign spouses.

Jakes last blog post..Who wants to have a new Laptop?
you know what, we can’t blame mr. baldwin for it. instead we should blame those syndicates & others who do it (whenever i watch imbestigador or xxx, most of the time i see those people doing sex business on internet). moreover, when you try google on the word “filipina”, you will see those sites promoting filipinas as if they are like objects.
there might be a law to that but i don’t think the government is implementing it with a fist iron coz if they are then how come there are still many many sites about it that is still popping out?
honestly, i’m also ashamed to tell the world that i live in the phils not that im ashamed being filipino but because of the bad reputation for filipinas. before i used to indicate “phils” as my location to my facebook, tagged & friendster but i eventually decided to change it coz 97% of those browsing me there are all sex maniacs who think of me as the same as many filipinas they know.
its so funny that whenever a foreigner say bad things about phils, filipinos become alarmed whereas they don’t realize that in the end, its their fault. i don’t find it insulting anymore coz its really true & that is what many filipinas do in the first place. i would have understand it if all those illegal filipino dating sites are operated or run by foreigners but sadly its also the filipinos who are doing it. WE ARE THE ONES WHO DICTATES OUR OWN REPUTATION.
Were it not for a so-called “mail order bride” site I’d not have the beautiful, industrious, multi-cultural family I have now. I’m proud of that, and so is my wife.
I don’t like the term “mail order bride” any more than anyone else here, since it has certain negative connotations and has been used and abused by the media. However, these days, your average “mail order bride” site amounts to nothing more than your typical (and perfectly normal) online dating site, like eHarmony or match.com and the hundreds of other like them. The only difference I can tell is the clientele. Obviously they focus on Filipinas meeting up with foreigners. Maybe there are some sites that treat people like raw commodity; I have not seen those.
Whatever the case, no one should take what this windbag Alec Baldwin says with any interest. Everyone here in his home country has written him off as a misogynist for the way he has treated his American ex-wife and daughter. Clearly he has issues with women. He was probably only half joking when he made this remark. His attitude is not representative of the average man’s here in the United States. Quite the contrary.
Don’t let the stupidity of one idiot bother you.
okkaaaaay… uhm. it’s just a joke like other people laugh about how stupid americans are, or how mabaho ang mga 5-6..
it’s funny cause it’s true….
Kesa nmang maging bitter kayu, lets just learn from this and be better sa kung anung ginawa mo ngayon sa buhay mo.
AMEN??? amen!
You don’t like it stop marrying foreign men. Otherwise, all the overblown hysteria it is really getting old. Your leaders try and find ways to divert your attention from the real problems in the Philippines. Don’t be a bunch of blind sheep, and instead focus on the real problem. CORRUPTION AT ALL LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT!
As 100% American Anglo, I am very sad to see the prejudice still existent in this country.
Many years ago I dated a second-generation lady from Filipino history. She was the victim of discrimination for being brown – and in California, too!
From what I learned of the true Filipino culture – and remember, this is through a US descendant, not a native – I thought the culture was warm, humane and intriguing.
I think Americans are desperately jealous of the culture, and lonely, too. American culture doesn’t have the humanity and connectivity that Filipino culture has.
“Mail-order bride” is more the story of American cultural emptiness, than an insult to Philippine culture!
