Sometimes it is the field between the two roads where the richest soil is toiled.

Where do Filipinas fit in the United States? Where do I want to fit in the United States? Growing up Filipina, bi-cultured, and questioning my identity was an unanswered and fathomless feat. It was not until my mid-twenties when I began to sharpen an under-utilized tool: my voice. Independence, significant relationships, and deepening my career brought a carriage of hard-edged stones as I contemplated heavy issues, such as belonging, ethnicity, sexuality, race, and gender.

Gabriela joined the Youth Led Communal Action for Truth, Justice and Change at the Liwasang Bonifacio in Manila yesterday. Their movement deals distinctly with the problems of women as women, working to free women from all forms of economic and political oppression and discrimination, sexual violence and abuse, neglect and denial of their health and reproductive rights. The movement is integral to the national liberation struggle for sovereignty, a democratic and representative government and equality between women and men in all aspects of life. Lastly, it is vital movement that harness the power of half of the country’s population towards liberation.

The Filipina of today is a life-size, full-length oil painting on canvas. She is a tableau that can be hung and appreciated, with pride or prejudice, depending on who the audience is. She is a multi-dimensional portrait. The background, shaped by the epochs in which she slowly evolved, greatly influences the main element, which is a mixture of diverse yet solid colors.

Janina, Janina…

Nope, this is not going to be a post of ridicule. You have had enough of that already. Tama na!

Look at the bright side:

  1. You are now an instant celebrity
  2. Your videos are among the most watched vids in Youtube. (no kidding!!)
  3. You already have a captured audience once you battle it out for the Miss World title. You can use this as an opportunity to show ‘em your stuff. Minus the wrong grammers, errrr…., grammar. (it is not so bad to have wrong grammar!)
  4. In spite of almost everyone saying that you are a disgrace , think about this : When you are in the Ms. World pageant, I am sure that more than 50% of those who ridiculed you will be rooting for you. If there is internet voting, we will vote for you!!!
  5. You are still young. At age 17, you are allowed a few mistakes here and there. Some young people your age are making worse mistakes than speaking poor English. (more…)

Centuries ago, the babaylan served as seer and sage, healer and community “miracle-worker.” They held an important and influential role in pre-Christian Filipino society as the primary mediator between the spirit world and the human world. While the role of a babaylan was open to both male and female, most babaylans from the pre-Hispanic era were female. These women healers were both revered and well-respected, and their value to their community well-recognized.

Today, after a long and arduous struggle, Filipino women in medicine have finally come into their own. Like their babaylan counterparts, the Filipina doctor has once more reclaimed her role in modern Filipino society both as healer and a force to be reckoned with.

When you are a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts. A mother always has to think twice, once for herself and once for her child. ~Sophia Loren, Women and Beauty

Unemployment, Poverty, Dreams — these are some of the reasons why Filipinas today are found in the different countries in the world. Bearing with homesickness and hard work, she slave away her nights and day to send remittance to the Philippines.

Fortunately to many Filipinas working overseas, they were employed in professions and jobs they have chosen and liked.Unfortunately to many though, Filipinas had to shift careers and convince selves that they would eventually like their work and it all would be worth it. In the past, depressing statistics showed that many teachers and other professionals migrated to Asian countries to become domestic helpers. Today, the trend is different: women shift careers to become nurses, caregivers, nursing assistants, and medical transcriptionists. Even doctors today shift to nursing because of the high demand for nurses abroad especially in the west.

There were also change of careers to become apple pickers in New Zealand or factory workers in Korea or Japan. Many Filipinas decided to leave behind their bachelor degrees for fifty to eight thousand pesos wages in apple picking or assembling electronics. Just last year, I have two good friends (one was a bank teller and another a physical therapist who have his own pharma business) who migrated to the States to become dishwashers and table wipers in a hotel.

I have high respect for all of these women who sacrificed their comfortable life, education, and career in the Philippines to try their luck abroad and secure the future of their family. Needless to say, their intentions are as noble as their deeds.

There are a lot of Filipinas out there with a good heart. And she is just one of many.
