-wikipilipinas-filipinaIn line with the principle of honoring the diverse, beautiful, and powerful image of a Filipina, WikiPilipinas will launch a special portal, Encyclopedia of Philippine Women, inside the site which will compile and detail the achievements and triumphs of Filipinas everywhere. Its sister site, Filipiniana.net, will also have a Philippine Women Microsite containing documents discussing Filipino women, as well as selected texts from the oeuvres of Filipina writers. Through a combined effort for advocacy, WikiPilipinas partnered with Filipina Images to help promote a more empowering image of the Filipina. By having an online platform to showcase Filipina intelligence and talent, the goal of developing more empowered Filipinas becomes achievable.

Many participants, through this project, will discover that they can help bridge the digital divide and promote gender mainstreaming and gender equality.

To promulgate the advocacy, WikiPilipinas and Filipina Images websites will launch “Filipina Stories,” a writing contest with the mission of uplifting the image of the Filipina.

Check the prizes and mechanics of this contest.

happy SlipChristine Gambito otherwise known as Happy Slip is a Filipino-American but for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) purposes, allow me to refer to her as a Filipina.

Gambito attributes her nickname “HappySlip” to her Filipino mother’s mispronunciation of “half slip”:

As a child, my Filipino mom would always remind me to wear a half-slip with skirts. However, the way she would pronounce the phrase was misleading: “Your hap e-slip! Be sure to wear your hap e-slip!” So I naturally went around calling the thing a ‘happy slip,’ until friends at school corrected me by asking if I had a ’sad slip’ as well.

It’s a well known fact that the Filipinas of today are far different from the traditional Filipinas in the earlier period. Being a pinay myself, I am thankful for all those fearless Filipinas in our history who valiantly fought against the society’s narrow concept on women particularly on the issues of our rights, responsibilities and capacities.

Today, to my delight, our country is already inundated with empowered Filipinas. We are now free to obtain an education, plan and have our own career and fight for ideals and principles that we believe in. Although there still exist tapered dogma on our gender from the conservative and conformist sector of our society, everyday, more women are enlightened and refuting abuses and violence against them.

The issue of mail-to-order-brides seems to come up more often these days. Either some people are already frothing in the mouth for it or against it, most often than not they don’t offer much solution. Come on, let’s face it Filipina women are smart and want to find themselves a better future which is most of the time going to developed countries. Who wouldn’t want to live in a higher standard of living? We all do! However, I strongly believe in marrying for the right reason which is L O V E.

So for those of you young ladies who would want to keep your dignity and self respect intact by not marrying a DOM for a green card, I have written an article How to come to America in hopes of giving you the different options to come here in the US.

If you are lucky enough to read this post from the comfort of your own home, office or Internet cafe, you are still one of the few lucky ones who can find a better future without being subjected to something that goes against your principles.

Well, of course you need to have the right tools and resources when you plan to do it your way and not wait for a charming knight in shining armor astride his noble stead. Are you up for the challenge or are you going to just play the damsel in distress?

When my two girls were in grade school, I’d often hang out with the mommies at the waiting shed, eagerly waiting for our daughters’ class dismissal. We called each other “classmates”. Starting from nursery till sixth grade, I had my gang of mothers. In one of our idle talks, we compared child rearing practices. One of these was handling our daughter’s suitors and request for parties once they reached high school. The topic was met with dread and fear of our daughters mixing with the wrong crowd or better yet, having a boyfriend at so young an age. I formulated my own set of ideas which proved to be a learning experience. I wrote some guidelines which you might be able to benefit if it applies to you. I know we, Filipina mothers make our own rules based so my guide is not definitive. It’s my own learning experience.
