I am listing 10 things for Filipinas to be Proud about instead of Fifteen Things for Filipinos to be Proud About but it serves the same purpose.

1. Sexy Filipina keyword is not limited anymore to dating sites. Filipina moms like Dine and myself can be found on page 1 of Google Search Engine Results Page (SERPs).

2. Miss Philippines, Precious Lara Quigaman, was crowned as the 2005 Miss International.

3. Mikki Fudolig. a 16 year old youngest student to graduate from the UP in recent years and one of only two admitted to the state university without a high school diploma and without taking the UP College Admission Test.

4. Lea Salonga was only 18 years old when she auditioned for the first-ever “Miss Saigon” role at London’s West End. She is popularly known to have opened the door for more Filipino and Filipina musical artists in the performing arts on the world stage.

5. Monique Wilson is better known as having influenced Philippine legislation regarding AWIR (Abuse of Women in Relationships) when she brought “Vagina Monologues” to Philippine Theater.

mildredt1.jpgThe Philippines can be proud not only because of the country’s high literacy rate but also because of her women authors who write and publish in the many languages of the country, both in the Philippines and abroad in diaspora. The development of women’s writing is tied to the history of the country and the language question - from oral tradition to silencing of women under Spanish rule, from the English period under American rule to the date when more literature is written in vernacular.

In this article is told more about the writers who are not represented elsewhere in the book “Firefly”.

The Language Question

They spoke the language of his childhood, the language he never used in Manila because it was not cosmopolitan enough.

filipinaimages_img.jpgDexie sent me a screencap of the Google Search Engine Results (SERPs) (click the thumbnail) for keyword “Filipina” and FilipinaImages.com is Number 1. Isn’t that amazing? I know the ranking changes day to day but I am happy to see it listed as number 1 in the Filipina keyword even for just a day. Over here in the Philippines, this site ranks number 2 and has been on page 1 of the Filipina Google SERPs.

mildredt.jpgIt is a challenge to reshape the Filipina image. It is a laborious task that every Filipina should clearly define to oneself. One has to identify her own culture, values, morals and view point about immensely overwhelming things good and bad around her such as media, the beautiful opportunities outside the country, poverty in her own country, lack of education, detrimental experiences that she escapes from, ambitions, etc. The image a Filipina depicts is an image of what her mind dictates. It should be based on free will. It should be that with much freedom and responsibility. A Filipina is much better than a woman who sells herself for some foreign man in exchange of comfort and wealth. She is a thousand times better than a wife who follows whatever is the dictate of her husband. She is a woman who should stand on her own with soundness of moral character and integrity and with the values that she learned from her forefathers. Above all, she should be a woman who has an independent mind, a firm and tough decision about how to run her life right and a woman who is strong in spirit. It is high time every Filipina comes out of the shell and prove to the world that we are on for a greater challenge- the challenge to reshape our dark image, magnify our true and beautiful color and quit to feign embracing the culture and life of some women that we can never be like.

Fabulousfilipina6HAVE YOU GOOGLED “FILIPINA” LATELY? The internet over the years has become the most powerful source of information- more than books, other print media, tv and library. It gives limitless knowledge to the point of overloading one with too much data. As such, it gives access to any unimaginable topic, issue, news, anything at your fingertips. It can also mar reputations, make you want to throw up for the sick sites you accidentally come across, ruin companies, destroy lives. Anybody can go to any search sites to search for anything one can possibly think of. Type a word, phrase, even a question and though won’t guarantee you will find what you’re looking for, it will supply however countless websites (by the hundreds of thousands of links) more than enough to divert your attention and focus on the searches found instead. Last month, I wrote an article in my blog about fighting exploitation through common sense, especially, exploitation of our women. And this post is around the similar train of thought. Since I don’t have TFC (The Filipino Channel) here in California, I usually browse GMANews about issues and news from the Philippines. I’d go to their section called Pinoy Abroad, the category is self-explanatory. I usually read letters from OFWs or migrant workers about the life away from the Philippines, and on the same page, I also read news about Filipinos all over the globe. It’s not rare that there are articles every now and then that are about exploited workers or women by illegal recruiters, foreign fiancés, or employers. I have nothing against people who want to risk their lives for a better future, but there’s a difference between risking and taking a calculated risk.
